A Croatian court has ordered the extradition of Russian citizen Magomed-Amin Gatagazhev, previously detained by Interpol. The 19-year-old native of Ingushetia has been held in a deportation prison in Zagreb since October of last year, according to the Memorial Human Rights Center.
Croatian authorities attempted to extradite Magomed Amin Gatagazhev, a native of Ingushetia, who is accused in Russia of participating in illegal armed groups due to his stay in Syria. Human rights activists, seeking to prevent his extradition, filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
Roza Dunaeva, a human rights activist and representative of Ichkeria, reported on the case, emphasizing that the charges against Gatagazhev, who is in a prison near Zagreb, are "patterned and have been repeatedly used in cases against people from the North Caucasus," indicating their political motivation. Dunaeva personally met with Gatagazhev to prepare the documents for filing a complaint with the ECHR.
According to Roza Dunaeva, another five or six individuals from the North Caucasus currently in Croatia have found themselves in a similar situation. Some were returned to Croatia from Belgium and Germany, while others were detained at the border. In all cases, the standard phrasing is used: "a threat to Croatia's national security." The human rights activist also notes that the documents lack an assessment or consideration of the risks associated with extradition.
