A court in the Stavropol Region sentenced a 40-year-old resident of the village of Staroizobilnenskaya to ten months of correctional labor for desecrating a mass grave of Soviet soldiers.

The incident occurred on May 22, 2025. According to case records, the man—who was intoxicated—visited the memorial where soldiers who died during the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War are buried and lit a cigarette from the Eternal Flame; the court deemed this an act of desecration of a military burial site.

The mass grave is designated as a cultural heritage site of regional significance. Following his detention, the man admitted his guilt and expressed remorse for his actions.

His case was heard under Part 2 of Article 243.4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which covers the desecration of military burial sites commemorating those who died defending the Fatherland. He was sentenced to ten months of correctional labor.

A similar incident took place in the Stavropol Region in March 2025. Ekaterina Zhulenko, a resident of the village of Rostovanovskoye, was convicted of desecrating the graves of military personnel who died in Russia's war against Ukraine. In March 2026, the regional court upheld her sentence—two years in a settlement penal colony.
