Georgians living in the United States called on the Georgian President to pardon Mikheil Saakashvili

With the release of Mikheil Saakashvili, it will be possible to reduce polarization in Georgia, which is the demand of its European friends and a significant part of the Georgian people. Citizens of the country living in the United States addressed Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili with this appeal.

In their appeal, broadcast by the Formula TV channel, the authors also indicated that Saakashvili’s revenge is being carried out by the Georgian government.

“Only a strong opposition will be able to prevent the pro-Russian government of Georgia from rigging elections and guarantee the holding of free and fair elections. The government elected in this way will be able to force our country to integrate into the EU. All experienced pro-Western politicians and natural alliances must be involved in this process, and we imagine Saakashvili to be such a person ", the statement says.

On October 1, 2021, ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili arrived from Ukraine (of which he is a citizen) to Georgia. He was arrested in an apartment in Tbilisi on the basis of sentences passed in absentia in two criminal cases. After this, Saakashvili went on a hunger strike, which lasted 50 days. Under Georgian law, the former president must spend six years in prison.
