Opposition figure Gulu Mammadli stated that the arrest of Ali Karimli, leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was expected, but the reasons go beyond simple criticism of the authorities. According to Mammadli, Karimli's publications in major Western media have increased his political significance and visibility abroad, which has caused concern among the Azerbaijani authorities.
Zurabishvili opened a new presidential office in Tbilisi and plans to go to Trump's inauguration
The fifth president of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, who does not recognize the legitimacy of the government and her successor, announced the opening of a new presidential office in Tbilisi and promised to continue the fight against the "Georgian Dream" policy. In addition, she announced that she intends to attend the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump.
Zurabishvili received an invitation to the ceremony from Republican congressman Joe Wilson. This happened on December 27, two days before the inauguration of Mikhail Kavelashvili, the president who was chosen for the first time in the history of Georgia not by the population, but by an electoral college, the absolute majority of which is made up of members of the ruling party. It is noteworthy that the new official head of state did not receive any guests from the United States.
"Dreamers" have already reacted to Zurabishvili's planned trip. The ruling party claims that the visit will be of a private nature and does not mean that Zurabishvila will be recognized as a legitimate representative of power by the Trump administration. Members of "Georgian Dream" also hinted at the fact that Zurabishvili bought the invitation through American lobbyists, and she has already commented on this assumption.
"You know, there are different types of invitations to the inauguration, for which, by the way, no one pays money. And if that were the case, many people probably have more resources than I have," said the fifth Georgian president.
In the Kremlin, the opening of Zurabishvili's new office of the president was also not ignored. The first deputy head of the international committee of the Federation Council, Vladimir Dzabarov, regarded this as a subversive work. In an interview with NEWS.ru, he emphasized that this can be considered treason or espionage.
"I think that it will end with the fact that she will join Saakashvili's company in prisons, I don't see another way. She is a political corpse, she is of no interest to anyone except her entourage. This is her personal political agony, after a month everything will be forgotten about her, and in order to receive a salary and grants, she needs to be reminded of herself somehow," the senator voiced his prediction.
Salome Zurabishvili herself shared plans to hold high-level meetings in the USA. In addition, she said that she continues contacts with European partners, who, according to her, do not recognize the parliament, the government and the president appointed by the "Georgian Dream". Zurabishvili reaffirmed her intention to continue to perform the duties of the legitimate president of Georgia.
