A Crimean activist is in a prison hospital with liver cancer

The former head of the Alushta Muslim community, Lenur Khalilov, has been in a Federal Penitentiary Service medical facility in the Arkhangelsk region for two months. He is being held due to serious illnesses, including liver cancer.

The prisoner's wife expressed concern that he was not receiving adequate medical care and had been unavailable for communication for a long time. He was recently awarded a third-degree disability.

In 2025, the Crimean Tatar's sentence was terminated due to cancer and other critical illnesses requiring qualified medical care. However, the prosecutor's office appealed this decision, and in mid-October of that year, the Arkhangelsk Regional Court ordered Khalilov's return to the penal facility.

Lenur Khalilov, along with Ruslan Mesutov, Ruslan Nagaev, and Eldar Kantimirov, were detained in Alushta in 2019 following a series of searches. In 2021, the Southern District Military Court found them guilty of creating and supporting the activities of a terrorist group, as well as conspiring to violently overthrow the government. The charges stemmed from their involvement with the Hizb ut-Tahrir party, which is banned in the Russian Federation. Khalilov was sentenced to 18 years in a maximum-security prison colony.
