Armenian opposition proposes to dismiss Pashinyan

The Republican Party of Armenia, headed by former President Serzh Sargsyan, has come forward with an initiative to impeach Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The corresponding appeal was sent to the parliamentary faction "I have the honor", which includes representatives of the party.

The reason for this decision is the failure of the current authorities to implement the government program adopted in 2021. In order to express no confidence in the prime minister, at least 54 out of 107 deputies must vote for impeachment.

The appeal emphasizes the need to nominate a qualified candidate from among the members of the Republican Party Council for the post of prime minister. In addition to it, the opposition parliamentary factions "Hayastan" and "I have the honor", as well as the extra-parliamentary United National Socialist Party, have previously announced their readiness to initiate impeachment of Pashinyan.

In March, the Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia brought new charges against Serzh Sargsyan - embezzlement and money laundering on an especially large scale. According to investigators, he illegally acquired real estate on the territory of the Yerablur military pantheon.

In 2019, Sargsyan was charged with organizing the embezzlement of state funds on an especially large scale, as well as helping a company win a tender for the supply of diesel fuel. He was acquitted at the time.

Serzh Sargsyan served as President of Armenia for almost ten years (until 2018). He was forced to resign after the "Velvet Revolution" led by current Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
