Armenia and Azerbaijan exchanged prisoners of war

Today, an exchange of prisoners of war took place on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in the Gazakh region of Azerbaijan. 2 Azerbaijani and 32 Armenian servicemen were released.

Armenian soldiers were captured in December 2020 in the area of the Karabakh village of Hadrut and in the subsequent period. Two Azerbaijani soldiers were detained near the city of Kafan in April 2023.

According to the head of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Mirzoyan, both sides are discussing the idea of withdrawing troops from the interstate border. This step will have a positive effect and will help prevent a possible new escalation, the diplomat noted.

On December 7, Baku and Yerevan announced the exchange of prisoners of war. The joint statement said that Armenia and Azerbaijan confirmed their intention to normalize relations and reach a peace treaty based on respect for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. This decision was welcomed by representatives of European countries, the USA, and international organizations.
