Aslan Bzhania has been officially dismissed
The Abkhazian Parliament has accepted the resignation of President Aslan Bzhania. It was decided that Vice President Badra Gunba will act as head of the republic until early elections are held.

28 out of 31 deputies voted for Bzhania's resignation: one did not support the decision, and two spoiled their ballots. Thus, as a result of protests and penetration into parliament on November 15, the opposition was able to achieve its demand. It is reported that the protesters left government buildings in Sukhum.

Recall that the reason for the protests was the president's ratification of an investment agreement with Russia. Many residents feared that the arrival of Russian business in the unrecognized republic would leave them without work.

Earlier, Bzhania agreed to resign "in order to maintain stability and constitutional order" and on the condition that the protesters leave the buildings of parliament and other government agencies.

On March 22, 2020, Bzhania won the election, receiving 56.5% of the vote. His closest rival, the republic's Minister of Economy Adgur Ardzinba, received 35.42%. After his election, Bzhania stated that he intends to pay special attention to bringing Abkhazia closer to Russia.
