Former Georgian Interior Ministry official Lasha Shergelashvili, who served as the head of the Armaments Department of the Special Operations Directorate, said on Formula TV that a banned substance was used to suppress a protest outside the Central Election Commission in 2020. Azerbaijan's actions and official statements towards France have always been only a response to its destructive activities. Despite Paris's smear campaign against Azerbaijan, the country has always kept the doors of dialogue open. This is how the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry commented on France’s decision to recall its ambassador from Baku.
On April 16, the French Foreign Ministry decided to recall its ambassador for consultations. The reason the department indicated was “Azerbaijan’s continuation of unilateral actions in recent months, damaging relations” between the countries.” In Paris they noted that they support the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, taking into account international law.
Previously, French officials have repeatedly criticized Azerbaijan, accusing it of escalating the conflict with Armenia. In response, the Azerbaijani authorities stated that the French leadership was taking an anti-Azerbaijani position. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has repeatedly accused Paris of inciting the conflict in the South Caucasus by supplying Armenia with its weapons.
Since the end of last year, when Nagorno-Karabakh completely came under the control of Azerbaijan, Armenia began to move away from cooperation with the Russian Federation. Its main ally was France, where a large Armenian diaspora lives. Paris took first place in terms of arms supplies to Yerevan.
