The Georgian Parliament has expeditiously passed a bill in its third and final reading requiring organizers of protests in "places where people gather or where vehicles are moving" (including on sidewalks) to notify the police. The responsible person must contact the Patrol Service Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (located at the location of the demonstration) in writing no later than five days before the rally.
The European Union has strongly condemned "disinformation and unfounded accusations by the Georgian authorities regarding the EU's role in Georgia." The corresponding statement was made by the EU Spokesman for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Anouar El-Anuni.
He stressed that undermining relations between the EU and Tbilisi "through Russian-style conspiracy theories and divisive narratives only serves the interests of those who oppose Georgia's democratic and European path." In addition, the EU strongly condemns the provocative personal attacks on EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky, El-Anuni noted.
"Recent statements spreading false information that the EU is trying to destabilize Georgia, drag it into war or impose so-called 'non-traditional values' are a deliberate attempt to mislead the public," the diplomat said.
In response, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili accused Brussels of labeling the country's authorities as "Russian".
"Instead of answering the legitimate questions of the Georgian people, the EU spokesman uses the tactic of labeling them as "Russian", which is an answer to many questions," Papuashvili wrote.
The Swedish Foreign Ministry also responded to Anouar El-Announi's statement, stating that Stockholm also condemns the spread of disinformation against the European Union and its ambassador to Tbilisi. In response, Shalva Papuashvili wrote that "until the Swedish Foreign Ministry condemns the call by its government member Erik Ottoson on November 11, 2024, to overthrow the Georgian government, until that moment, any condemnation by the Swedish Foreign Ministry in Georgia is insincere and frivolous."
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, in turn, stated that the words of the Georgian Dream members are lies and disinformation about the EU's goals in Georgia.
"The lies and disinformation of the Georgian Dream about the EU's goals in Georgia will not succeed. We stand for a peaceful and prosperous future for Georgians, based on a solid foundation of democracy, the rule of law and reforms," the ministry said in a statement.
