Chechen activist Mansur Movlaev, who has been held in an Almaty pre-trial detention center for 16 months, has attempted suicide. Vadim Drozdov, the lawyer representing him, reported this to *Novaya Gazeta Europe*.

In a note, Movlaev wrote that he could no longer live in fear of potential extradition to Russia. He stated that he fears torture and murder upon his return to Chechnya.

"Forgive me; I am tired of the injustice! Neither the court nor the prosecutor's office will listen to us!" the note reads.

In his message, Movlaev asked for help for Russian activist Yulia Emelyanova, who is being held in the same detention center and also faces potential extradition to Russia.

There is no official information regarding the activist's current whereabouts or condition. According to the Anti-War Committee of Russia, Movlaev has received medical attention, and his life is not in danger.

Mansur Movlaev is known for passing information to Chechen opposition Telegram channels between 2019 and 2020 regarding abductions, enforced disappearances, torture, and the fabrication of criminal cases in Chechnya. He left Russia in 2023 and was detained in Almaty in May 2025.

Kazakhstan has denied his request for asylum and is considering his extradition to Russia. Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights Committee has ordered Kazakh authorities not to extradite Movlaev until his complaint has been reviewed on its merits. Human rights defenders warn that he could face torture and death if returned to Chechnya.
