Russian mathematician and blogger Mikhail Verbitsky has been detained at the Yerevan airport. Russian authorities previously placed him on the wanted list, considering him a terrorist, and may in all likelihood request his extradition.
The ancient technology of wineskin cheese production from Dagestan could gain international recognition. It is being considered for inclusion in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) program, which recognizes unique agricultural practices that have survived the ravages of time and industrialization.
This opportunity was discussed at a visiting meeting of the Russian Civic Chamber in Makhachkala. The GIAHS program, a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS), was discussed. It already includes over 100 sites from 29 countries.
The Dagestani candidate for wineskin cheese production, still preserved at the Sogratl agricultural firm in the Gunibsky District, was a technology for making wineskin cheese. This production method is considered one of the oldest in the region and has been passed down from generation to generation.
According to Shamil Dzhamalov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Dagestan, the republic has a unique combination of natural zones and its own distinct agricultural culture. He believes that obtaining international status could not only draw attention to local products but also boost various aspects of the region's development.
"Dagestan has a distinctive agricultural culture. Receiving our enterprises' Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System status will promote their products, develop agritourism, preserve rural areas, and increase rural incomes," the deputy minister shared.
FAO GIAHS consultant Fyodor Voitenkov explained the status application process and selection criteria to the meeting participants. These include the historical value of the practice, its connection to the local community, and its ability to be preserved in modern conditions.
If the application is approved, the technology for making Dagestan's burdyuch cheese could be added to the list of agricultural systems considered part of the cultural and economic heritage of humanity worldwide.
