The Georgian Prosecutor's Office intends to question former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and other public figures as part of the investigation into the death of human rights activist Lazar Jorbenadze. The office states that investigative actions have confirmed the death was suicide.

Jorbenadze died on April 4, 2026. According to the Prosecutor's Office, investigators have already interviewed people who were in contact with him, including his family members and wife.

The decision to conduct additional questioning was made following public statements by Garibashvili and others raising doubts and questions regarding the circumstances of his death. Investigators intend to speak with Nika Gvaramia, co-chair of the Coalition for Change; Irma Inashvili, leader of the Alliance of Patriots; TV presenter Nanuka Zhorzholiani; Khatia Dekanoidze, a representative of the United National Movement; Tazo Datunashvili, a member of Lelo – Strong Georgia; and others.

Investigators paid special attention to a letter Garibashvili published from prison on September 1. In it, the former prime minister inquired about the possible causes of Zhorbenadze's death and stated that questions remain in the public regarding the series of suicides that occurred during the presidencies of Irakli Kobakhidze and Mamuka Mdinaradze.
