Film about deportation of Georgians from Russia nominated for Oscar

The Georgian National Cinematography Center will present Rusudan Glurjidze's film "Antiques" for the 2024 Oscars. It tells the story of the mass deportation of Georgians from Russia in 2006.

In the fall of 2006, a coordinated policy of arrests and expulsions of Georgian citizens was carried out in the Russian Federation in connection with the political conflict between Moscow and Tbilisi. The ECHR ruled that the Kremlin's actions violated several articles of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The 2019 ECHR decision to pay 10 million euros to Georgian citizens deported from Russia has still not been implemented. Earlier, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe proposed to study all ways to ensure the implementation of this decision. The organization's secretariat was instructed to create and publish a register of fair compensation for all interstate cases against the Russian Federation.
