In Crimea, police officers issued human rights activist Abdureshit Dzhepparov a warning against violating the law. Law enforcement officials explained the document's origins in connection with the upcoming holiday on May 9th, but such actions typically occur shortly before the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Deportation of the Crimean Tatar People (May 18th).
Georgia and Armenia took third and fourth place in the democratic development index
The Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum has published a ranking of post-Soviet countries in terms of democratic development and European integration.
Moldova is the leader in the index, Ukraine is in second place, Georgia is in third, Armenia is in fourth, Azerbaijan is in fifth, and Belarus is in sixth.
As for Georgia, the authors noted that there is strong political polarization in the country. The movement towards democracy, in their opinion, will be facilitated by “the eradication of a hostile political culture and the accountability of authorities.” In addition, Georgia has seen a deterioration in democratic rights and human rights protection mechanisms in the areas of independent media, freedom, security and justice.
