Georgia and Russia can restore diplomatic relations after a 16-year break

Georgia and the Russian Federation plan to restore diplomatic relations. The selection of employees for the Georgian embassy in Moscow has begun. This was reported by the Mtavari channel with reference to sources.

Representatives of the ruling Georgian Dream party deny this information. However, last May, Tbilisi and Moscow resumed flights that had been canceled in 2019. This sparked protests in Georgia. In 2024, a law “on foreign agents” was adopted in Georgia - the opposition calls it “Russian law.”

Diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Russian Federation were severed in 2008 due to the war, after which Russia “recognized the independence” of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The day before, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze called US sanctions offensive and inconsistent with the spirit of partnership. He expressed the hope that this decision will be revised over time, since it is in Georgia’s interests to deepen relations with the United States and the EU.

On June 6, Washington imposed visa sanctions against dozens of parliamentarians, including members of the Georgian Dream, and security officials due to the law on foreign agents.
