Georgian opposition thanks US for visa sanctions against ruling party

The chairman of the largest opposition party, the United National Movement, Levan Levan Khabeishvili, thanked the United States for sanctions against the leaders of the ruling Georgian Dream party.

“Parliamentarians who voted for the Russian law, and police officers who dispersed peaceful demonstrators, came under sanctions, and this is just the beginning. Thank you to the United States of America for supporting the Georgian people!” – Levan Khabeishvili wrote on the social network.

The leader of the Akhali party, Nika Melia, noted that sanctions are an expected and not the last step taken by Western civilization. According to him, it seems that even tougher measures will follow very soon.

“America has once again reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Georgian people. The United States took the first action. The first wave of sanctions against the treacherous government is approaching. However, we must remember that the more the Georgian Dream government moves away from democracy and moves closer to Russia, the more it will damage the country and our international interests,” emphasized Mamuka Khazaradze, leader of the Lelo party.

On June 6, the US State Department announced the first package of visa restrictions. The list of persons prohibited from entering the United States includes members of the Georgian Dream and parliament, law enforcement officers, as well as their relatives.
