Today, Azerbaijan celebrates the 34th anniversary of its restoration of state independence. On August 30, 1991, the Supreme Council of the Republic adopted the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence, and on October 18 of the same year, the Constitutional Act enshrining this status was adopted.
Georgian opposition calls on new Syrian regime to revoke recognition of Abkhazia

At today's joint briefing, the Georgian opposition appealed to the new Syrian authorities to revoke recognition of the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia. The leader of the "Coalition for Change" Nika Gvaramia noted that putting forward such demands is the prerogative of the Georgian government, but "under the conditions of the practically Russian authorities, this is impossible."
"We, the pro-Western opposition, which was supposed to come to power in the coalition as a result of the elections, are fulfilling our patriotic duty and have appealed to the new Syrian government to revoke recognition of Abkhazia," he said.
The parties "Strong Georgia", "Unity - National Movement" and "Gakharia - For Georgia" have joined the appeal.
Abkhazia is a self-proclaimed republic that received military support from Russia during the 1992-1993 war. Most countries in the world consider this territory to be part of Georgia. Abkhazia's independent status has been recognized by only five UN member states: Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, and Syria. The latter made this decision in 2018, and in 2020, an embassy of the self-proclaimed republic appeared in the Syrian capital. And even after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, the Abkhaz diplomat, as stated in Sukhumi, continued to work in Damascus.
