Crimean Tatar political prisoner placed in strict conditions

Timur Yalkabov, sentenced to 17 years, was transferred to strict conditions in IK-17 in Murmansk. According to his wife, the reason was allegedly that the prisoner did not work in his previous place of detention - the prison in the city of Dimitrovgrad in the Ulyanovsk region.

The woman also noted that her husband used up the entire supply of asthma inhalers, which was enough for six months, during his one and a half months in the Murmansk IK. Timur Yalkabov has a group III disability. His illness worsened in prison. He reported that he was not given an inhaler in prison until he had an attack. He was kept in the punishment cell of the Dimitrovgrad prison for almost four months on far-fetched grounds.

On March 22, 2022, the Southern District Military Court sentenced Timur Yalkabov to 17 years in prison. He was accused of participating in the Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir, which is recognized as terrorist in the Russian Federation but operates freely in Ukraine and Europe. According to the case materials, the accused did not own a weapon, did not plan to commit a terrorist attack, and did not call on others to commit terrorism. The defense and Yalkabov himself called the trial fabricated and linked it to public criticism of the security forces for repression against other Crimean Tatars.
