Latvian MEP: The visit of the President of the OSCE PA to Georgia is a catastrophic and untimely step

The member of the European Parliament from Latvia, Ryhards Kols, who actively supports the Georgian opposition, called the visit to Tbilisi by the President of the OSCE PA Pia Kauma, scheduled for January 8-10, a "catastrophic and untimely step". According to the MEP, the Georgian authorities will present this visit as a "propaganda victory" against the background of the strengthening "autocracy" in the country.
"Although I am no longer a part of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, I have heard that the President of the OSCE PA Pia Kauma is planning a delegation visit to Georgia on January 8-10 - a catastrophic and untimely step. This visit coincides with the strengthening of the power of the Ivanishvili regime through preventive arrests in the Russian style, the adoption of draconian laws, the brutal suppression of protests, and after the elections, which, although they were generally free, did not meet the second two principles of legitimate elections - they were neither fair nor transparent Many delegations are outraged, and quite justifiably so. Such a visit will bring the regime a propaganda victory, legitimize the autocracy in preparation, and at the same time critically undermine confidence in the OSCE PA," Kols said.
He noted that if this visit is so important for Pia Kauma, then she should have made it privately, and not as a representative of an organization "financed by taxpayers, who in the vast majority of cases oppose such spineless and unprincipled steps."
"Weak leadership creates bad times. Let's hope that Pia Kauma knows better," summed up the Latvian MEP.
