Mikheil Saakashvili called on the opposition for unity

The United National Movement, the largest opposition party, will sign the Georgian Charter of Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili. This was stated by the ex-president of the country, party leader Mikheil Saakashvili.

“We must be able to coordinate on a single presidential candidate, including we need to be able to agree on the issue of creating the most common lists. I want to speak about unity once again, I want to call on the United National Movement, calculate what the ratings of each party are, and redistribute half of our quotas between other parties. Complete redistribution will not work; there must be a voter representative. Whatever the rating, let's redistribute half of the quotas among other parties in advance. Just let’s unite, in this situation there is no alternative to unity,” Saakashvili called.

More than a dozen opposition parties have already signed the Georgian Charter. Earlier, Salome Zurabishvili invited the opposition to reconcile and sign the document. It talks about confirming the country’s Euro-Atlantic course and canceling unpopular anti-Western initiatives like the law on foreign agents and the law on offshore companies.

“If the opposition wins the next parliamentary elections, it is necessary to carry out reforms in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Security Service and other departments, as well as changes to the Electoral Code. In addition, it is necessary to cancel “politically motivated cases against demonstrators participating in the 2024 protest” and declare an amnesty,” the president noted.

Today, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Archil Talakvadze signed the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence.” It was adopted as a result of overcoming the veto of Salome Zurabishvili. The new law requires non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and media outlets that receive more than 20% of their income from foreign sources to register as “agents of foreign influence.”
