Convicted ex-oligarchs from Dagestan appealed the verdict

Complaints against the verdict of the co-owners of the Summa group, former billionaires from the Forbes list, brothers Ziyavudin and Magomed Magomedov have been sent to the Second Cassation Court.

In December 2022, the Meshchansky Court of Moscow sentenced Ziyavudin Magomedov to 19 years, and Magomed Magomedov to 18 years in a maximum security penal colony. Four of their alleged accomplices received sentences ranging from 7 to 12 years. In December 2023, the Moscow City Court reduced Ziyavudin Magomedov's sentence from 19 years to 18.5 years. His brother Magomed's sentence was also reduced by six months.

Along with the verdict, the court satisfied the victims' claims for about 3.6 billion rubles. Ziyavudin Magomedov's shares in Summa, the Fesco transport group and other controlled companies were also confiscated. As for personal property, the court seized an airplane, apartments and cars.

The 2026 World Press Freedom Index, published this morning by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), records the worst deterioration in global media freedom in 25 years. More than half of the world's countries rank the situation as "challenging" or "very challenging," and the average index level has never been lower. A key trend is increasing legal pressure on the media: of the five indicators used to assess press freedom worldwide (economy, law, security, politics, culture, and society), the "law" indicator showed the most significant decline.
