Following reports of Mansur Movlaev's brother being tortured, activists claimed his parents had been kidnapped

Social media accounts by supporters of Chechen refugee Mansur Movlaev have reported the abduction of his parents, Khava and Movsar Movlaev. They were forcibly taken away to an unknown location in Chechnya.

Their relatives do not know their whereabouts, the publication states.

Recently, news emerged of the abduction and violence against Mansur's brother, Zelimkhan Movlaev. In May, he was hospitalized with severe rectal injuries. As a result of his injuries, he is unable to sit or sleep normally.

The authors of the publications note that neither his brother nor his parents have any connection to Mansur's activities, and that the repression against his relatives is connected to pressure exerted on him.

As a reminder, in 2020, Mansur Movlaev received a three-year prison sentence after being found guilty of drug trafficking. According to the activist himself, his criticism of the Chechen leadership was the reason for the persecution. He was released on parole in 2022. However, in August of that year, he was abducted by officers from the Shali District Department of Internal Affairs in Chechnya. He was held in a so-called "secret prison," where he was tortured. In 2023, he managed to escape and, without documents, reached Kyrgyzstan. In May 2025, he crossed into Kazakhstan and was arrested on the basis of a request from Russia. In Russia, Movlaev is wanted for financing extremism.

Mansur is currently in extradition custody in Kazakhstan, awaiting a final decision on his asylum application. According to the official UN report on his case, Movlaev's extradition to Russia entails the risk of torture and ill-treatment due to the systemic nature of human rights violations in Chechnya. Also mentioned in relation to the Kazakh authorities were the obligations to comply with Article 3 of the UN Convention against Torture, the principle of non-refoulement and the suspension of any extradition proceedings until all review procedures by the UN Committee have been completed.
