A criminal case was opened against a Chechen human rights activist

The investigating authorities of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case against a human rights activist, a native of Chechnya, Abubakar Yangulbaev, under the article "Organization of extremist activity." The reason was his videos criticizing the Russian authorities on the YouTube channel of the 1ADAT project, which is banned in Russia, and on his personal Telegram channel.

Earlier, the brothers Abubakar, Ibragim and Baysangur Yangulbaev were charged with several criminal cases under extremist articles. In addition, in 2022, their mother, Zarema Musayeva, was kidnapped in Nizhny Novgorod and taken to Chechnya, where she is under arrest on charges of assaulting a police officer. Examination and witnesses refute the arguments of the investigation. Despite this, the woman faces over five years in prison.

The Yangulbaev family was forced to emigrate abroad. Abubakar repeatedly turned to the head of Chechnya, Kadyrov, and offered to exchange him for his kidnapped mother.
