A new criminal case has been opened against Zarema Musayeva

Another criminal case has been opened against Zarema Musayeva. She is suspected of disrupting the activities of a penal colony in Argun, Chechnya. The woman faces up to five years in prison under the article, said Alexander Savin, a lawyer for the Team Against Torture.

At the end of October, it became known that Zarema Musayeva was questioned by an investigator from the Investigative Committee. According to him, she allegedly attacked an FSIN officer who accompanied her on her daily trips to the hospital. Zarema denies these accusations and insists that she could not have physically attacked even if she had tried.

At the end of October, when Musayeva’s conversation with the investigator became known, the head of the Team Against Torture, Sergei Babinets, commenting on her case, said that “another term will most likely be a death sentence for her.”

"Zarema should be released in March next year," Babinets wrote. "We are making every effort to ensure that she can be home as soon as possible. With her health, she cannot be kept in a colony; she needs constant treatment, a diet, and supervision."

Zarema Musayeva has insulin-dependent diabetes type 2. In May, she was treated in a day hospital, and in June, in the final protocol, her diagnosis was changed to one that does not allow her to be released from prison due to health reasons. On October 21, a month after her lawyer's request, the prisoner was hospitalized for examination and treatment.

Earlier, the European Court awarded Zarema Musayeva and her family compensation for inhuman treatment and threats from the Chechen authorities. In early March, the Pyatigorsk Cassation Court reduced the woman's sentence from 5 years to 4 years and 9 months in prison. Last year, in Grozny, she was convicted of using violence against a government official.

Let us recall that on January 20, 2022, police officers from Chechnya arrived in Nizhny Novgorod and forcibly took Musayeva to her home region. After being taken to Grozny, the woman was accused of using force against a police officer. Allegedly, she scratched his face.

Zarema Musayeva is the mother of Chechen activists Abubakar, Ibragim and Baysangur Yangulbaev. Human rights activists claim that she was kidnapped as a hostage and convicted for her sons' opposition activities.
