The Russian Federation offers Georgia mediation in negotiations with South Ossetia and Abkhazia

Russia is ready to facilitate dialogue between Georgia and the self-proclaimed republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to establish long-term peace in the region. This is stated on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. This statement was made in connection with the 16th anniversary of the August 2008 war between Georgia and the Russian Federation.

In the statement of the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zakharova emphasizes that a real contribution to the stabilization of the situation "should be the launch of the process of delimitation of the Georgian-South Ossetian and Georgian-Abkhaz state borders with their subsequent demarcation." She also accused the USA and its allies of inflaming the situation at the Russian borders.

Let us remind you that Georgia severed diplomatic relations with Russia after the 2008 war and Moscow's recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In 2019, Tbilisi canceled all flights with Moscow, but in 2023 air traffic was restored.

According to observers, the ruling Georgian Dream party is trying to get closer to the Russian Federation by worsening relations with the West. Officially, Georgia aspires to join the EU and maintains relations with NATO, while adopting laws that contradict European values.
