Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared his intention to "destroy" the political forces represented by the "three-headed oligarchy" led by former President Robert Kocharyan and businessmen Samvel Karapetyan and Gagik Tsarukyan.
Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili called the expected agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, mediated by Donald Trump, a "historic moment." According to him, this could mean a weakening of Russia's influence in the Caucasus and a strengthening of the US role.
"This day will go down in world history as the date of liberation of the Caucasus from the clutches of Russia," he said.
In May, Mikheil Saakashvili was found guilty of illegally crossing the border and sentenced to four years and six months in prison. Taking into account the three previous sentences handed down to him, the politician's total prison term is 12.5 years. Thus, he will serve his sentence in a Georgian prison until 2034.
Mikheil Saakashvili believes that the charges brought against him are politically motivated. He claimed that the sentences were handed down to him on the personal orders of the founder of the country's ruling party, Bidzina Ivanishvili.
