The International Press Institute (IPI) has expressed concern over new legislative initiatives by the Georgian government and ruling party that restrict independent media funding.
In Minvody, Essentuki, Kislovodsk, Zheleznovodsk and other cities of the Stavropol Territory, employees of the Central Election Commission of the Ministry of Internal Affairs conducted searches of activists who were collecting signatures in support of the nomination of Boris Nadezhdin as a presidential candidate.
Investigative actions were taken not only by those who collected signatures, but also by those who signed up to participate in the elections as observers. The victims were not presented with any orders. Security forces confiscated the phone of one of the activists in Mikhailovsk.
One of the employees of Nadezhdin’s headquarters suggested that security forces make such visits to activists before elections for the purpose of intimidation. Stavropol, as well as Krasnodar and Novorossiysk, became cities where Nadezhdin’s headquarters announced exit polls at the exits of polling stations (polls of voters about their preferences). Voting in the Russian presidential elections will take place from March 15 to 17, 2024.
