Media: the cause of death of a Chechen suspected of committing a terrorist attack in Crocus could have been a beating by security forces

A native of Chechnya, Askhab Uspanov, died in the Moscow police department after being detained on suspicion of complicity in the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall. This was reported by the Agency with reference to the mother of the deceased.

It is noted that Askhab Uspanov called his wife and said that he had “been rude to the security forces.” He was detained at a bus stop by masked men, and he resisted them. Two hours later, when the wife arrived at the police station, she was told that “her husband was no more.”

According to the Chechen movement Adat, Uspanov was beaten to death: he was found to have broken ribs and spine, signs of suffocation and hematomas.

Later, according to Adat, security forces staged Uspanov’s suicide. His mother said she did not believe in the suicide theory. The woman believes that her son was not involved in the terrorist attack.

On March 22, terrorists attacked Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk near Moscow. According to the latest data, 144 people died. Most of them suffered carbon monoxide poisoning in the fire due to blocked emergency exits. To date, 10 people suspected of involvement in the attack have been arrested.
