The USA and Germany criticized the law on foreign agents initiated in Georgia

The German Foreign Ministry commented on the rallies taking place in Georgia against the law on “foreign agents”. Let us remember that the country's parliament adopted it in the first reading.

“Thousands of people in Georgia protest every night for freedom of speech and a vibrant civil society. EU candidate status represents a historic opportunity. The Georgian government has a responsibility to ensure that it does not deliberately impede the country’s path to a European future,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The US State Department also again criticized the Georgian initiative to introduce a law on “foreign agents”.

“We find the contents of this law incredibly disturbing. This is similar to the laws that we see in the Kremlin and other countries in the world that have a history of suppressing the media, suppressing representatives of civil society, non-profit organizations. We believe that this kind of legislation is incompatible with the stated goals of the European Union, and Georgia itself has stated that it is interested in joining the EU,” said US State Department Deputy Press Speaker Vedant Patel.

This year, protests against the re-initiation of the bill on foreign agents in Tbilisi continue for the tenth day. Thousands of people gather near the parliament building, and the police periodically disperse the crowd. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili regularly opposes the initiative of the ruling party.
