The US plans to impose sanctions against the founder of the Georgian Dream for cooperation with Russia

The US is considering the possibility of imposing sanctions against the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, billionaire, and former Russian citizen Bidzina Ivanishvili. This was reported by the Georgian service of Voice of America (VOA), citing high-ranking US officials.

It is noted that the work on the sanctions package will be carried out by the US Treasury and State Departments.

"We have information that Ivanishvili has taken steps to develop relations with Russian oligarchs in order to provide Russia with better access to the Georgian market. In fact, he took certain actions on the instructions of Russian intelligence," a high-ranking US government official said.

The sanctions were imposed based on a decree issued by US President Joe Biden. The document establishes "a legal basis for imposing sanctions on individuals and legal entities engaged in activities in the interests of the Russian Federation."

The US has previously imposed a number of visa and financial restrictions on Georgian politicians, officials, security officials and businessmen. The reason is the undermining of democracy and the adoption of anti-democratic laws.
