The US expects Georgia to take the first step toward restoring relations

The US wants good relations with Georgia. This is stated in a statement published on the website of the US Embassy in Tbilisi.

"The first step toward restoring relations must come from the Georgian government. We are waiting for their proposal," the statement emphasizes.

On August 9-10, US Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Congressman Michael Turner visited Georgia. During the visit, they met with President Salome Zurabishvili, Defense Minister Irakli Chikovani and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. The latter stated that Georgia is ready to reset relations with the US.

The issue discussed at the meetings of the American guests was that the United States of America wants to have good relations with Georgia and the Georgian government should take the first step to normalize relations, the embassy statement says.

Georgia's relations with the US and the EU have worsened against the backdrop of the adoption of the law on foreign agents initiated by the ruling Georgian Dream party in May. The State Department said it was imposing visa sanctions on dozens of Georgian citizens, including government officials, members of parliament, their relatives, and law enforcement officers, based on the law.
