Tbilisi Court Orders Gela Hasai, Member of the "Girchi — More Freedom" Party, into Pretrial Detention

The Tbilisi City Court ordered Gela Hasai, activist and member of the opposition party "Girchi — More Freedom," who was detained on September 29. He is charged with intentionally causing moderate bodily harm, committed by a group of individuals.

The judge supported the prosecutor's position, which insisted on a strict pretrial detention. The prosecution pointed out that the crime was committed by a group and classified as serious. She argued that this creates the risk of evidence destruction and evasion of investigation. The prosecutor's office also reminded the court of Hasai's past administrative offenses, including arrests for resisting police.

The politician himself stated that he was subjected to inhumane treatment during his arrest and at the police station, where he was twice forced to completely undress, 20 minutes apart. Khasaya also said that one of the law enforcement officers who detained him was a frequent attendee of pro-European rallies. According to the activist, the officer said he had fulfilled his promise and detained him.

After the decision on the preventive measure was announced, a scuffle broke out in the courtroom between those present and the bailiffs.

"Gela, we are with you," shouted the activist's supporters, after which they were asked to leave the courtroom. The verbal altercation escalated into a physical confrontation, which continued outside the building.

The next hearing in this case is scheduled for November 20.

Earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that another person had been detained along with Khasaya.

According to investigators, during a conflict on September 1 at Vokzalnaya Square, the defendants beat a man born in 1975 and fled. The victim was hospitalized.
