Armenia is preparing to adopt a new Constitution
A referendum on the adoption of a new Constitution of Armenia may be held after the parliamentary elections. This was reported by the country's government. The parliamentary elections are scheduled for June 2026.

Secretary of the Armenian Security Council Armen Grigoryan noted that changes to the country's constitution have been discussed since the beginning of 2020 and this has nothing to do with any external processes.

The day before, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the new constitution will enshrine the ideology of "Real Armenia".

"The ideology of "Real Armenia" identifies the homeland with the internationally recognized state of the Republic of Armenia, and patriotism with the interests of the state and the system of rights and obligations established in it," Pashinyan explained.

A referendum, according to him, is necessary so that the citizens of the country perceive themselves as the founders of the constitutional order existing in it. Pashinyan noted that the current legal order in Armenia is perceived as imposed by someone, which hinders progress in the country.

The Azerbaijani authorities have repeatedly stated that in order to sign a peace agreement, Armenia must amend its constitution to eliminate territorial claims there, in particular, regarding Nagorno-Karabakh.
