Forty-one criminal cases have been opened in Armenia for participation in the Gyumri unrest
The Investigative Committee of Armenia has opened criminal cases against 41 participants in the Gyumri unrest, 24 of whom have been arrested. The unrest occurred on October 20 in front of the city hall during the arrest of Vardan Ghukasyan, the mayor of Gyumri. The court sentenced him to two months' pretrial detention on charges of bribery.
The day before, Vardan Ghukasyan was charged with "public calls to renounce Armenia's sovereignty." The defense believes the charges are politically motivated, citing the Gyumri mayor's statements in favor of a union with Russia while preserving Armenian sovereignty.
