In Azerbaijan, an oppositionist and a journalist continue their hunger strike in custody

Elkhan Aliyev, a member of the opposition Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, is holding a dry hunger strike in prison, demanding an end to his criminal prosecution. According to his wife, the man is receiving death threats on behalf of the prison management.

Elkhan Aliyev was arrested in July 2023 on charges of fraud and preparing false documents. The charges allege that he sold a plot of land using forged documents. Aliyev stated that he had been framed and was being persecuted for political reasons.

Human rights activists recognized the activist as a political prisoner. On April 1, the Baku Serious Crimes Court sentenced him to 5 years in prison.

Osman Narimanoglu (Rzayev), the head of the Demokratik.az website, who was sentenced to 6.5 years, also continues his hunger strike. The day before, the appeal court upheld the verdict.
The journalist has been in prison for almost two years. Arzu Rzayeva's wife reported that her husband's health condition had worsened, but the necessary medical care was not being provided to the journalist.

Osman Narimanoglu was arrested in July 2022 on charges of extorting money from officials. He said the charges were fabricated. The man considers his revealing materials about corrupt officials to be the reason for his persecution. In January 2024, the court sentenced him to six and a half years in prison. Human rights activists recognized Osman Narimanoglu as a political prisoner.
