A native of Chechnya, whose extradition was demanded by the Russian authorities, was released in Belgium
Belgian authorities have released Chechen Islam Albakov, the human rights organization Vayfond reported. He had been held in a Belgian deportation center since 2019 – Russia sought his extradition on charges of participation in an illegal armed group.
Recently, rallies were held in support of Albakov in Brussels and Vienna demanding his release. Human rights activists reported a deterioration in his health.
In 2018, Islam and his brother Imran proved in a Belgian court that the charges brought against them by Russia were fabricated. However, the first of them was soon arrested, while the second is at large in France.
