The militants demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya. On the afternoon of September 3, two explosions thundered in the building, a fire broke out. The special forces entered into battle with the militants when the hostages began to run out of the school. As a result of the fighting, 334 people were killed, including 186 children.
Marina Duchko, a former hostage of the terrorist act, died last fall in North Ossetia due to illness, she developed sepsis. During the explosion in the gym, the woman received a serious spinal injury and lost the ability to walk. The woman underwent several operations, one of which ended in failure.
The terrorist act became the largest in the history of Russia in terms of the number of victims and remains so to this day. The only surviving terrorist, Nurpashi Kulaev, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Russian Investigative Committee reported that 19 years later, the identity of one of the five previously unidentified terrorists was established. It turned out to be a native of Ingushetia Aslanbek Parchiev. This is reported by Izvestia.
