Food prices rising in Chechnya: cheese and vegetables see biggest hikes

In June, prices in Chechnya rose faster than in the previous month. According to the regional branch of the Bank of Russia, the average cost of goods and services in the republic increased by 2% over the month.

The regulator attributes this to several factors. Supply decreased for certain items, while producers and suppliers faced rising costs for packaging, logistics, and labor. Consequently, these expenses were passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices.

Among food products, cheese saw the most significant price increase. Producers incurred higher costs for packaging, transportation, and employee wages, which impacted the final product price.

Prices also continued to rise for the so-called "borscht basket" staples: cabbage, onions, carrots, potatoes, and beets. The Central Bank notes that by June, stocks of last year's vegetables are largely depleted, while the new harvest traditionally enters the market at higher prices.

However, not all food prices went up. Chicken eggs, conversely, continued to get cheaper for the third consecutive month. The Bank of Russia attributes this to increased domestic production, which has kept market supply high.

Thus, rising food prices—primarily cheese and seasonal vegetables—were the main drivers behind the acceleration of inflation in Chechnya in June.
