Eroding Sunzha Riverbank to Be Reinforced in Chechnya

Work will be carried out in Chechnya to reinforce the banks of the Sunzha River and halt further erosion.

According to Khamzat Magamadov, head of the Gudermes District, specialists will shape and reinforce the riverbank slope to reduce the current's impact on the shoreline. Large stones will also be laid in the most vulnerable areas to protect the bank from further scouring.

Priority tasks were identified and the work schedule agreed upon during an inspection of the site. "This issue requires a timely solution and will be closely monitored," Magamadov noted.

The project aims to prevent further shoreline erosion and protect adjacent areas from the consequences of the process.

The Sunzha is the largest right-bank tributary of the Terek River. Originating on the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, the river flows through Ingushetia and Chechnya, passing through the city of Grozny. Periodic scouring of the Sunzha’s banks leads to shoreline erosion, threatening roads, bridges, utility networks, and other infrastructure.

This spring in Ingushetia, heavy rains caused the Sunzha’s bank to erode, leading to the collapse of a section of a dirt road. Authorities warned at the time that further erosion could cut off transport access to three residential houses inhabited by 25 people.
