In Crimea, Esma Nimetulayeva, Nasiba Saidova, Elviza Aliyev, and Fevziye Osmanova were detained following searches in the Bakhchisaray and Sevastopol districts. They are charged with organizing and participating in terrorist activity due to their alleged affiliation with the Islamic political party Hizb ut-Tahrir, which is banned in Russia.
Journalists held regular pickets in Makhachkala in defense of arrested journalist Abdulmumin Hajiyev. They demanded his release and that all political prisoners be released.
Hajiyeva is accused of financing terrorism. The accusation was based on two components: the transfer of 16 thousand rubles to ISIS (prohibited in Russia) and the propaganda of terrorism in twenty articles. Neither thesis was confirmed in court. Moreover, none of the prosecution witnesses was able to disclose incriminating information about the journalist.
Earlier experts confirmed the absence of propaganda of religious intolerance and supremacy of Sharia, as well as calls to terrorism in Hajiyev’s articles. In addition, the examination found that there was no indication in the materials submitted by the prosecutor that money had been diverted to a charity fund or that the authorities had been overthrown.
