In Dagestan, a life sentence has been requested for the person accused of kidnapping and murdering a girl

A hearing was held in the Supreme Court of Dagestan on the criminal case of the kidnapping, rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl from Kaspiysk, Kalimat Omarova. The trial has been going on for seven years. The prosecutor requested a life sentence for the accused, Magomed Mirzalibagandov. The defendant admitted his guilt.

The second defendant in the case is Zaira Aliyeva. She is accused of organizing the kidnapping of a minor. They are asking for 11 years in prison. The defense is expected to speak on April 9, after which the verdict will be handed down.

Kalimat Omarova went missing on July 29, 2018 in Kaspiysk. Her mother sent her to the store for bread, but the girl did not return home. Two months later, her body was found in a gutter. The parents were unable to identify the child. Later, examinations confirmed that this was the body of Kalimat Omarova.

In October 2020, the Investigative Committee for Dagestan announced the arrest of 36-year-old resident of the Levashinsky District Magomed Mirzalibagandov and his 50-year-old common-law wife Zaira Aliyeva on suspicion of kidnapping, raping and murdering Kalimat Omarova. The investigation established that the man kidnapped the first-grader, kept her in an apartment for four days and raped her. Later, his common-law wife, a distant relative of the kidnapped girl's family, suggested that Mirzalibagandov demand a ransom of 2 million rubles from the child's parents. However, fearing exposure, he killed the child and got rid of the body. According to the Investigative Committee, the rapist packed Kalimat's body in a bag and threw it in a trash bin near her house.

The 2026 World Press Freedom Index, published this morning by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), records the worst deterioration in global media freedom in 25 years. More than half of the world's countries rank the situation as "challenging" or "very challenging," and the average index level has never been lower.
