Germany hopes for a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia to be signed this year

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, at a press conference in Berlin with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, expressed hope that a peace treaty will be signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia this year. According to Aliyev, there are very good opportunities to achieve peace and Baku is ready to cooperate.

The President of Azerbaijan told that 6 thousand Armenian refugees have already returned to Karabakh, and by the end of the year the number of returnees will reach 20 thousand.

Today, Armenia received the 9th package of proposals from Azerbaijan on the draft peace treaty. Last time, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said that Baku and Yerevan could not agree on two main points of the peace agreement, such as recognition of territorial integrity and the process of further delimitation.

Recently, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia will not fight for Nagorno-Karabakh. “We must consistently promote the peace agenda as it is the key to ending hostilities. This process should be based on three main principles: mutual recognition of sovereignties, using the Alma-Ata Declaration as the basis for delimitation and opening transport routes based on the jurisdiction of the respective countries,” Pashinyan noted.

He recently emphasized that for the first time, Armenia and Azerbaijan resolved the issue at the negotiating table. This is how Pashinyan commented on the agreements on the first stage of delimitation and the return of four Azerbaijani villages.
