In Chechnya, armed men attacked journalist Yelena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov, who were on their way to court for the sentencing of Zarema Musayeva. Both were severely beaten: now the man is [sitting] in a wheelchair, the journalist is also unable to move. This was announced from Grozny by the head of the "Team Against Torture" Sergei Babinets.
“Both were beaten up by people in black balaclavas. They kicked and punched them, reminded them of their past activities in Chechnya, threatened them with weapons. This is clearly not a gang attack. This is an attack for their professional activities,” Babinets is sure.
At present, the editors, colleagues and friends of the victims are organizing their removal from Chechnya.
Early in the morning, Nemov and Milashina's car was blocked by armed men on the way from Grozny airport. They were severely kicked, including in the face. The lawyer has difficulty speaking and moving around. Elena Milashina reportedly has broken fingers, she is losing consciousness, her head has been shaved bald and doused with brilliant green.
Novaya Gazeta just told Meduza that “Milashina’s documents and equipment were destroyed, she and Sasha [Nemov] have numerous bruises, both are in a moderate condition, they are under medical supervision. Nemov will go on Musayeva’s case, Lena is physically unable to continue the business trip.”
Babinets also reports that the police wanted to interview Milashina and Nemov in the hospital, but they refused to testify - they see no point in this.
