Georgia recalled that many members of the government participated in organizations financed from Europe and the USA

Opponents of the law on foreign agents initiated by the ruling party of Georgia recalled that many representatives of the country's authorities were themselves members of foreign foundations.

Among the persons mentioned are the current Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze, who worked for 9 years in US and UN organizations, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, who was listed in the German foundation, as well as many ministers and members of parliament.

“We call on them to publicly explain to the Georgian people whether someone gave them instructions to act in the interests of a foreign state, and if so, to name specific cases. Georgian non-governmental organizations have acted and will act to achieve the goals provided for by their charters, protect the interests of Georgian citizens and strengthen the democratic public order in the country,” says the collective appeal of Georgian non-governmental organizations.

Earlier, the United States and NATO criticized the law on foreign agents initiated in Georgia. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at a press conference that the introduction of such a law “would be an action against the strengthening of democratic institutions.”

A rally was held in Tbilisi against the adoption of a “pro-Russian” decision. At the parliament building, people came out with posters “No to the Russian law” and “Two years of stubbornness in Europe.”

Recently, Georgian Dream introduced a bill “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” to parliament. It provides for the registration of those NGOs and media whose 20% or more of their income is received from abroad.
