Georgia commented on the European Union’s decision to limit cooperation

Secretary General of Georgia's ruling Georgian Dream party, Kakha Kaladze, said that the authorities will provide the army with everything necessary without EU help.

“We received gratitude for the fact that our military was represented in peacekeeping missions in greater numbers than NATO countries. And now the European Union comes out and says that it will cancel the money for the military... The army will not lose anything. The authorities will do everything to ensure that the army receives everything it needs to be at its best,” Kaladze said, commenting on the EU’s decision to suspend the allocation of $30 million for the country’s Ministry of Defense.

Georgian Foreign Minister Ilya Darchiashvili called the EU’s decision to suspend funding for the country’s Ministry of Defense “incomprehensible.” He emphasized that this will not interfere with Georgia’s integration into the EU, since this decision was “adopted at the micro level.”

The process of Georgia's accession to the European Union is currently suspended, EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky said yesterday. The EU has also suspended financial support to the Georgian Ministry of Defense from the European Peace Fund (EPF) in the amount of $30 million for 2024 due to the adoption of the law on foreign agents. If the situation worsens further, other measures are being considered, the diplomat added.
