In the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, 10 residents accused of creating an extremist community will be tried

A criminal case against members of the "Sharia patrol" has been sent to the Elbrus District Court of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic. The defendants are local residents Damrai Baizulaev, Azamat Zhashuev, Tamaz Zvanbaya, Murman Ivechiani, Timur Kardanov, Nazhmudin Liev, Aslan Nakhushev, Shamil Rakhaev, Zeytun Temmoev and Askhat Chechenov. They are charged with creating an extremist community, as well as calls for extremist activity.

According to investigators, the defendants beat with sticks and exerted psychological pressure on those whose behavior and lifestyle did not correspond to their beliefs. The group, which operated from March 2017 to November 2023, was led by a 41-year-old resident of Tyrnyauz.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that 16 people fell victim to the "Sharia Patrol" members. In addition, the organizer of the criminal group and his accomplice, according to law enforcement, wrote extremist comments on social networks in February 2024 and May 2025.

The 2026 World Press Freedom Index, published this morning by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), records the worst deterioration in global media freedom in 25 years.
