Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev has commented on Armenia’s plans to begin preparing an application to join the European Union, saying Yerevan would ultimately fail to secure EU membership but could seriously damage its relations with Russia and other members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Moscow expressed disapproval of Armenia’s choice in favor of the European Union.
The start of the EU monitoring mission on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is an attempt to «extradite» Russia from the region. This was stated by the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
«Unfortunately, this is not the first time that we record the desire of the European Union and the West as a whole to consolidate ourselves in Armenia, she said.
At Yerevan’s request, a new EU mission with a two-year mandate to monitor the situation on Azerbaijan’s border had begun its work the previous day. The total number of observers is 100. The operational headquarters is located in the city of Yeghegnadzor, Vaiotdzor Oblast of Armenia. The mission is aimed at resolving border conflicts in the South Caucasus.
