Moscow welcomes the initiative of Georgian politicians to restore ties and is ready to follow the path of resuming diplomatic relations. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
Georgia broke off diplomatic relations with Russia after the 2008 war and Moscow's recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In 2019, Tbilisi canceled all flights with Moscow, but air traffic was restored in 2023.
On June 11, the Georgian opposition TV channel Mtavari reported that Georgia and Russia are working to restore diplomatic relations between the countries. The Russian Foreign Ministry called this information “fake.”
The ruling Georgian Dream party, according to observers, is trying to get closer to the Russian Federation by worsening relations with the West. Officially, Georgia strives to join the EU and maintains relations with NATO, while passing laws that contradict European values.
