Opposition figure Gulu Mammadli stated that the arrest of Ali Karimli, leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was expected, but the reasons go beyond simple criticism of the authorities. According to Mammadli, Karimli's publications in major Western media have increased his political significance and visibility abroad, which has caused concern among the Azerbaijani authorities.
Yerevan’s statements that Moscow and the CSTO did not help Armenia during the aggravation in Karabakh are a lie. Yerevan made decisions under the influence of NATO. This is what Maria Zakharova, a representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on air on the Zvezda TV channel.
“I accuse everyone who professes and spreads the idea of guilt of Russia and the CSTO for the decisions taken by Yerevan on Karabakh of lying,” Zakharova said.
According to her, a new aggravation between Armenia and Azerbaijan depends on how much Yerevan allows the EU, USA and Britain to destructively influence the situation in the region and country. When NATO makes promises to a country, you need to ask the question: “Where did they succeed before?” Zakharova noted.
She also raised the issue of Armenia's desire to have closer relations with the European Union than with the Russian Federation.
“The Armenian authorities are in vain comparing the ancient Armenian civilization with the European Union, whose affairs today are frankly bad,” said Maria Zakharova.
Earlier, Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan noted that the path to the EU for the country is “the most desirable and correct option that we should go to.”
